Background In this study, the potential of extracts and powders of green seaweeds, Ulva fasciata, and Enteromorpha flexuosa was evaluated as biocontrol against the pathogenic soil-borne fungi, Macrophomina phaseolina and Fusarium solani, infecting cucumber plants in Egypt. The antifungal activity of the algal extracts was evaluated in vitro against the pathogens mycelial fungal growth using five organic solvents. Results Obtained results indicated that mycelial growth inhibition was noticed with F. solani in all algal extracts tested. In M. phaseolina, all algal extracts did not inhibit the fungal growth but affected microsclerotia formation (the main source of the second infection). In the case of F. solani, the highest reduction (68.6%) was noticed, while the chloroform extract of U. fasciata inhibited the radial growth of F. solani to 2.5 cm when E. flexuosa inhibited the radial growth to 4.3 cm as compared with the control (8.0 cm). The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the infrared spectroscopy analyses revealed that iron-monocarbonyl, cyclononasiloxane, and their functional groups, including amine, ether, etc., might play a core role in the anti-fungal activity of the seaweed extracts used. Conclusion This work concluded that the macroalgae species with many unique antifungal properties components had an inhibitory effect against soil-borne cucumber diseases. The antimicrobial activity might be explored in the future in numerous diverse applications in agriculture and plant disease control, revealing their actions to control some plant fungal pathogens.

Brown seaweed extracts are commercially used as agricultural biostimulants, and the green macroalgae Ulva spp. has shown promise for that purpose. We evaluated the ideal dosage of U. lactuca ulvan and flour on seed germination invigoration and the effects of U. flexuosa and U. lactuca extracts on tomato seedling growth (Solanun lycopersicum). The germination recovery of aged seeds after the application of U. lactuca was evaluated by seed germination rates and seedling emergence. Greenhouse cultivated seedlings were irrigated with 0.2 and 0.4 g×L-1 of the flour, or an ulvan solution of Ulva spp. Seedling growth parameters (height, stem diameter, height/stem diameter ratio, biomass, and number of leaves) were compared with the control (seedlings irrigated with distilled water). All dosages of U. lactuca ulvan and flour were found to increase the germination rates of aged seeds as compared to controls. No significant difference in seedling emergence rates were seen. After treatment with Ulva spp. extracts no significant differences in seedling growth were detected. We concluded that low doses of the U. lactuca extract will increase the germination rates of S. lycopersicum seeds and, while different dosages of the extracts of two Ulva’s species did not stimulate tomato seedling growth, they were also not lethal.

Ulva fasciata é uma macroalga verde de curto ciclo de produção amplamente indicada para aquicultura multi-trófica integrada (AMTI). O presente estudo avaliou o desempenho em curto prazo (7 dias) em seis diferentes densidades de estocagem (de 1 a 6 kg m-3; n=4). Foram determinadas a produção em biomassa fresca (PBM), a taxa de crescimento diário (TCD), as concentrações de carbono, nitrogênio e fósforo e o rendimento de ulvana (RU). Os percentuais em peso seco de C foram de 29,58 ± 0,21 a 31,81 ± 2,08%, de N foram de 5,16 ± 0,53 a 6,01 ± 0,57% e de RU foram de 14,25 ± 2,94 a 17,83 ± 4,03%, mas não diferiram entre as densidades testadas. Foram verificadas diferenças para a concentração de P (0,110 ± 0,010 a 0,137 ± 0,010%), para a PBM (62,05 ± 15,52 a 212,05 ± 26,54 g m-3 dia-1) e para TCD (3,21 ± 0,37 a 5,29 ± 1,15 % dia-1), com maiores percentuais de P e TCD associadas às menores densidades. As maiores densidades de estocagem se mostraram economicamente mais vantajosas no cultivo, fornecendo maior rendimento da Ulva fasciata por unidade de produção e maior capacidade de retenção dos nutrientes.
