Digital superficial angiomyxoma

Abstract: Superficial angiomyxoma is a rare, distinctive cutaneous soft-tissue neoplasm, which shows a prominent myxoid matrix with numerous blood vessels. This condition usually presents with a nodular lesion on the trunk, head and neck, or the genital region. We describe a case of superficial angiomyxoma, which presented at an unusual digital location while also demonstrating the features of transepidermal elimination, and which mimicked a digital myxoid cyst.

“…[8] To the best of our knowledge, there has been only two published report on digital superficial angiomyxoma, the first one describing two subungual lesions occurring on the thumb in one case and on the fifth toe in another case,[4] and the second article describing a nodular lesion on the finger mimicking a digital myxoid cyst. [3] The differential diagnosis of a mucinous dermal nodule is vast. A close mimic is a digital myxoid cyst.…”

“…This ma terial may only be present in noticeable amounts at the onset of the disease. 300 A skin flap that includes the undersurface of the cyst and the tissues between the cyst and the distal interphalangeal joint, but avoiding removal of the skin itself, has been used successfully in their treatment. 280 Sometimes it is most prominent in the lower dermis.…”

“…1 Subungual and digital tumors without skeletal involvement have been reported. 4 Manasori et al 5 described a superficial angiomyxoma of the thumb with osteolysis of the distal phalanx well separated from the bone under the nail. This case report describes a similar condition, but with extensive destruction of the distal phalanx of the thumb, an unusual presentation of a hamartoma, which if treated early gives good results.…”
