Digital disruption leads to high-level risk in innovation management that will impact established firms in disrupted industries. This study investigates the key variables to enhance innovation performance (IP) in a disruptive environment by applying strategic entrepreneurship framework from [Hitt, MA, DG Sirmon, RD Ireland and CA Trahms (2011). Strategic entrepreneurship: Creating value for individuals, organizations, and society. Academic of Management Executive, 25(5), 57–75]. This study sampled the managers of two largest established firms in telecommunication and banking industries in Indonesia. Both industries are in top five of the most disrupted industries. Entrepreneurial leadership (EL) is essential in formulating innovation strategy. This leadership variable has multicollinearity with that of entrepreneurial culture (EC). It indicates that both variables are symbiotic. While in implementing innovation strategy, the configuring core innovation capabilities that combine exploring the opportunity and exploiting the firm’s advantage enhance the IP. Due to core rigidities, this configuring core innovation capabilities should not be orchestrated with collaborative innovation.

Digital disruption is widely used as a shorthand label to describe digital innovation phenomena --often without paying enough attention to the properties of digital, disruptive, and innovative. As a result, the term lacks precision and confounds phenomena that are neither digital nor disruptive innovations. Yet without these theoretical foundation the concept is rendered meaningless. In this paper, we conceptualize digital disruption by attending to its properties stemming from its roots in digital innovation and disruptive innovation. In doing so, we add to past work by attending to the idea of digital disruption beyond the fad.

Zusammenfassung Neben der massiven Erhöhung der Leistungsfähigkeit ist die radikale Miniaturisierung von Technologien ein zentraler Aspekt des digitalen Zeitalters – auch im Bereich der Robotik. In diesem Kontext stellen Smart Dust und Micro Robots mikro-elektro-mechanische Systeme im Sub-Millimeter-Bereich dar, je nach Ausprägung mit Sensorik‑, Verarbeitungs‑, Kommunikations- und Aktuatorikfähigkeiten ausgestattet. Dieser praxisorientierte Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle von Smart Dust und Micro Robots im industriellen Sektor auf der Evidenzgrundlage von Fokusgruppen mit Industrievertretern. Interessierten Fach- und Führungskräften wird aufgezeigt, welche Potentiale resultieren, welche Hürden gemeistert werden müssen und welche strategische Aktivitäten es zur wertschöpfenden Nutzung in die Wege zu leiten gilt. Auch wenn heute in der Praxis noch schwierig umzusetzen, erkennt die Industrie diese Technologien und den damit verbundenen Mehrwert durchaus an.
