Different natural courses of chronic hepatitis B with genotypes B and C after the fourth decade of life

Abstract: The rate of development of LC was comparable in patients infected with genotypes B and C when CH-B occurred at < 30 years old. However, CH-B patients infected with genotype C showed poor prognosis if they were 30-49 years old and were positive for HBeAg. Age-specific natural course of CH-B should be considered when patients with CH-B are treated with antiviral drugs.

“…An estimated 20z to 30z of HBsAg carriers may experience reactivation of hepatitis B with elevation of biochemical levels and high serum DNA levels with or without seroconversion to HBeAg. HBV reactivation is usually asymptomatic, but it may mimic active viral hepatitis (20,26,27).…”

“…Older age at presentation and not knowing the duration of exposure jointly suggests late presentation of CHB patients at the study site hospital. The course of hepatitis B after the fourth decade of life is more severe and associated with a higher chance of cirrhosis and cancer [22]. Therefore, community awareness should be raised about the treatment of CHB to prevent liver cancer.…”

“…В процессе исследований последних лет открыто 8 генотипов HBV (от «А» до «Н»), которые влияют на клиническое течение болезни и эффективность противовирусной терапии [20,30,43]. Так, при лечении препаратами интерферона альфа больных хроническим ВГВ положительный вирусологический ответ чаще отмечают у больных с генотипами А и В (до 40%), реже -при генотипе D (до 10%).…”
