Dielectric Spectroscopy of Dry and Wet Soils in Frequency Region from 20 Hz to 20 GHz

Abstract: The complex permittivity of a soil is a very much useful parameter in remote sensing applications. The measurement of complex permittivity of soil at various microwave frequencies can be related with the moisture content in the soil, which is useful in Agriculture, Hydrology and Meteorology. The complex dielectric spectra of dry and wet soil samples were measured in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 GHz. For this, various instruments and different methods were used. The complex permittivity of the soils, in… Show more

“…To validate the accuracy of electrical conductivity measurements, electrical conductivity of NaCl solutions was first investigated at various molar concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 500 mM (supplementary information, Table S2 ). The measured values agreed with reported data for conductivity of salt water with different salinity (Culkin, 1986 ; Schmidt et al, 2018 ; Gadani et al, 2012 ; Peyman et al, 2007 ; Lewis, 1980 ). Distilled water with a measured electrical conductivity of 0.01 mS.cm −1 , in agreement with literature values (<0.02 mS.cm −1, 25°C) (Ageev & Rybin, 2020 ; Golnabi et al, 2009 ), was also considered as a control solution.…”

“…Both 𝜀 ′ and 𝜀 ′′ increased with moisture content but decreased with frequency. Similar results were reported by Gadani et al (37)(38) for moist and fertilized soil of Gandinagar and Palanpur district as a function of frequency. Ahire and Chaudhari (39) reported an increase in 𝜀 ′ and 𝜀 ′′ as a function of moisture content at 5.3 GHz for soils of Navsari district.…”
