“…Our results strongly suggest that dexpanthenol was released from the lipophilic vehicles and penetrated the epidermis, or else our findings would be hard to account for. Our results thus confirm Stüttgen's observation of percutaneous absorption of tritiated dexpanthenol [19].…”

“…These experiments demonstrate a positive effect of pantothenate on the proliferation and migration of dermal fibroblasts especially at a concentration of 20 μg/ml. The dosages of pantothenate applied in our in vitro experiments are in good correlation to in vivo studies by Burlet (27) and Stütgen and Krause (24) who measured the penetration of panthenol in human and rodent skin. Burlet described a skin concentration of pantothenic acid of 30–40 μg/g in rat skin after repeated percutaneous application of 20 mg of panthenol, which is equivalent to dosages regularly applied to human skin.…”

“…Because CoA is not transported across barrier membranes, pantothenic acid is the compound that is transferred in the body. Panthenol is an alcohol analogue to pantothenic acid, depending on the formulation it is well absorbed in human skin (24) and can be oxidized to pantothenic acid by alcohol dehydrogenase (25). Panthenol has therefore been used for many years for skin protection and improvement in skin regeneration after wounding (2).…”

“…Dexpanthenol is a stable alcoholic analog of pantothenic acid. Contrary to pantothenic acid, it is well absorbed through the skin (4,5). Bepanthen TM was first introduced as an ointment approximately 70 years ago (in 1944).…”
