The entry of a second group or radical into the nucleus of a monosubstituted benzene is well characterized by the lack of random in respect to the position attacked. Indeed, such apparently is also the case for any aromatic substitution reaction in which there are one or more substituents present and two or more positions open to substitution. Thus it is a very general phenomenon and one of no slight complexity. In its simplest form, where a single substituent enters the ring of a monosubstituted benzene, it is the fact that all three possible isomers are not formed in equal amounts which gives rise to this problem. (It is to be noted that possibly twice as much of the ortho and meta isomers as of the para isomer would be the normal circumstance in the absence of directive influences.) Furthermore, the ratio of isomers formed varies enormously with the character of the original substituent. These facts summarize briefly the well-known problem of orienting influences in the benzene ring.That each aromatic substituent possesses a characteristic directive influence has been known for many years, and not a few hypotheses have been offered to explain the observation that a group was either ortho-para or meta directing. But it is not easy to classify the many substituents in this way, for an almost infinite variation in the ratios of the isomers is apparently possible. Though such a situation is caused in large measure by the great number of possible substituents, there are other factors as well. The influence of temperature, reaction medium, and catalysts should not be heedlessly neglected. Bei der Substitution in der Benzol-Reihe unterscheidet die klassische Chemie 2 Hauptarten der Orientierung, nach denen der zweite Substituent entweder in orthound p r a -oder in metu-Stellung zum ersten Substituenten tritt . I n Ubereinstimmung hiermit stehen auch die elektro-polaren Theorien iiber die Struktur des aromatischen Kerns. Wesentlich komplizierter ist die Frage der Orientierung in der Naphthalin-Reihe: Die groGere Anzahl der substituierbaren Stellen, die wenig geklarte gegenseitige Beeinflussung der beiden Kerne des Naphthalin-Molekuls, die Abhangigkeit der Orientierung von der Temperatur (besonders beirn Sulfurieren) erschweren die Untersuchung stark. In der vorliegenden Mitteilung beschranke ich mich auf die Priifung der allgemeinen Orientierungs-Regeln, ohne in diese Frage tiefer einzudringen, insbesondere ohne auf den EinfluB der Temperatur Rucksicht zu nehmen.Bereits 1890 stellten A r m s t r o n g und W y n n e l ) , die die Bildung von Isomeren beim Sulfurieren des Naphthalins einschrankende Regel auf, nach der eine neu eintretende Sulfogruppe niemals ortho-, paraund peri-Stellung zu der friiher eingetretenen einnimmt. Von dieser empirischen Regel sind bis heute nur 2 Ausnahmen bekannt : die Bildung von Naphthylamin-(2)-und Naphthol-(2)-tetrasulfonsauren-( 1.3.6.7) beim Sulfurieren der Naphthylamin-(2)-bzw. Naphthol-(2)-sulfonsaure-(7) mittels Oleums2) ; fur Naphthalinsulfonsauren sind keine Abweichungen von der Regel bekannt. Die in der Regel von A r m s t r o n g und W y n n e enthaltene Einschrankung entspricht der gewohnlichen Orientierung im Benzol-Kern, sie fugt nur erganzend hinzu, daG die Sulfogruppe im Naphthalin auch nicht in peri-Stellung eintreten kann.Die weiteren Untersuchungen von Ve s el f und J a ke 6 3, gaben die Moglichkeit zu einer allgemeineren Regel iiber den Eintritt des zweiten Substituenten in den Naphthalin-Kern : a) Substituenten, die im Benzol-Kern nach ortho und para orientieren, tun dies im Naphthalin-Kern hauptsachlich nach den chinogenen Stellen.
