“…Since the yields of staphylococci were comparatively low in the TSB, it was of interest to test if dialysis cultivation could give increased bacterial concentrations and higher yields of protein A in this medium. Dialysis cultivation has been shown to facilitate the production of very concentrated cultures of micro-organisms (Schultz & Gerhardt 1969). In most studies this has been ascribed to the provision of nutrients from the reservoir medium to the growing culture.…”

“…The present system of diffusion culture as a process for production of concentrated cheese starter was based on data obtained from earlier prototypes. The first experimental systems were based on data given by Schultz & Gerhardt (1969) where each ml of fermenter culture was in contact with approximately 1 cm2 of membrane area and the fermenter/reservoir working volume ratio was 1 : 10 i.e. with a fermenter volume of 1 1 the membrane area would be 1000 cm2 and reservoir volume 10 1.…”

“…Gerhardt and his co-workers were successful however, in producing concentrated cultures of organisms other than lactic streptococci. A review by Schultz & Gerhardt (1969) gives a comprehensive theoretical treatment of the subject and some basic parameters for equipment design.…”

“…We thank Dr. PHAFF for a culture of the organism. In addition to enzyme purification by adsorption to its substrate and subsequent elution as devised by PHAFF, we obtained a good yield by growing the organism inside a dialysis bag which was suspended in Yeast Nitrogen Base medium (Difco Lab., Detroit, Midiigan) containing 3% glucose (SCHULTZ and GERHARDT 1969). The medium was stirred continuously.…”
