Diagnosis and Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis due to House-Dust Mites in Spain

Abstract: When patients with HDM-induced allergic rhinitis are referred to an allergy specialist in Spain, they have moderate-to-severe persistent disease and are generally not achieving good control with symptomatic treatment. Allergen immunotherapy is prescribed in approximately one-half of patients. In this representative sample of Spanish allergy specialists, the level of adherence to clinical guidelines in these patients is encouraging.

“…investigated AR patients, specifically sensitized to HDM, seen by specialists and found 70% of PER AR. 20 Compared with Valero et al . our findings were different because PER AR frequency in our HDM-sensitized subjects (see Table 3) was not higher than the country's mean.…”

“…The prevalence of rhinitis phenotypes has been studied by several other investigators over the last 10 years, in Europe (Spain, 1820 Italy, 21 France, 22 Poland, 23 Bulgaria, 24 and Greece 25 ) and in the Middle 26 and Far East (Malaysia 27 and China 28,29 ). In one-half of the reports INT is more frequent, in the other half PER prevails, varying from 26 29 to 73%, 30 according to the country, data collection method applied and the type of patient studied: from telephone interviews to the public at large on one hand, to confirmed AR patients seen by specialists on the other.…”

“…18 In a recent Spanish survey, just 15% of allergic rhinitis patients sensitized to dust mites reported an improvement after pharmacological treatment. 19 Another possibility would be that patients with perennial allergic rhinitis do not take adequate treatment due to an effective allergen avoidance. A recent update of the Cochrane Review on house dust mites avoidance and allergic rhinitis stated that dust mites impermeable bedding and other preventive measures are not proven to give a substantial benefit to control rhinitis symptoms.…”
