Developments in Estimating Visceral Fat Area from Medical Examination Data

Abstract: Aim:The aim of this study is to develop a simple method for estimating visceral fat area (VFA) using medical examination data. Methods: The study subjects were 100 males who had undergone medical examinations and computed tomography (CT) at the umbilicus level. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to estimate VFA. The Bland & Altman Method was used to examine the tendency for mean difference between VFA observed by CT and VFA estimated by medical examination data. We calculated crossvalidation and sensit… Show more

“…Nevertheless, these procedures are inadequate to screen large populations, since they are time consuming, expensive, and specialized equipment that may expose the individuals to ionizing radiation [16, 17]. To circumvent such limitations, predictive equations were validated to estimate VAT from simple anthropometric measures [1618]. In this setting, these predictive equations can be considered as simple, cost effective, and easy measurement tools to assess VAT and surrogate the imaging techniques [16].…”

“…Few studies have determined the prevalence of visceral obesity in different populations [10][11][12] , probably due to the limitations of radiological methods, capable of differentiating the components of abdominal fat in subcutaneous and visceral fat, in addition to the inability of anthropometric measurements to represent the VAT area particularly 13 . Computed tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography (USG) have high cost, limited availability of equipment and submit the individuals undergoing assessment to radiation (CT) 14,15 , preventing their use for the assessment in large groups of individuals, precluding its use as a screening tool for the population 16 .…”
