Developmental tendencies in the academic field of intellectual property through the identification of invisible colleges

Abstract: Intellectual property became a relevant academic cross-disciplinary field in an international context with the demand for the global governance of knowledge. However, the degree of consolidation of cross-disciplinary academic communities is not clear. To determine how closely related are these communities, this paper proposes a mixed methodology to find invisible colleges in the production of intellectual property. Scientific articles from 1994 to 2016 were extracted from Web of Science, taking into account th… Show more

“…Bibliometric analyses can identify key researchers and research hubs to facilitate collaboration and the dissemination and implementation of knowledge, opportunities for new collaborations for multidisciplinary work, and cognate subject areas that can bring fresh approaches, new expertise, and new methodologies to anti-doping. It can also detect the so-called “invisible colleges” (Newman, 2004 ; Palacios-Núñez et al, 2018 ) that may help or hinder research development.…”

“…The resolution parameter γ (γ > 0) influences the number and sizes of clusters. This level of control is crucial because it gives more flexibility in identifying relevant communities, especially in exploratory analysis (Palacios-Núñez et al, 2018). Different from traditional weighted modularity clustering (Muff et al, 2005), there is no general optimum value of γ, and it is recommended to test different values for the resolution parameter for a satisfactory level of detail for the research goals (D'Angelo & Magnusson, 2021).…”
