“…According to Wang et al (2019), the annual sewage produced by cities around the Bohai Sea increased from 1.5 × 10 9 tons in the late 1980s to 3 × 10 9 tons in 2000 and to 7.5 × 10 9 tons in the mid-2010s, adding nutrient filtration burden to natural coastal wetlands. However, a geographic information system-based study (supported with satellite imagery analyses) suggested that coastal reclamation shortened the natural coastline of Bohai Sea from 1,397 km in 1990 to 561 km in 2014 (Hou et al, 2018). According to some researchers (e.g., Comín et al, 2014;Crumpton, 2001;Geho et al, 2007), these changes may decrease the nutrient filtration effect of coastal wetlands.…”

“…The rate of coastline change was relatively slow from 2000 to 2005, significantly increased from 2005 to 2015, and decreased from 2015 to 2020. These changes can be attributed to China's successive policies aimed at constraining development and strengthening the protection of the Bohai Sea [55].…”

“…Over time, there has been a gradual deepening of land use, in line with urban expansion and economic development. This trend is likely due to the increasing demand for land utilization and integration, leading to artificial breeding areas encroaching on wetland environments, and construction land encroaching on cultivated land and forest land [55].…”

“…The tidal flats along Jiaozhou Bay are key habitats for fish spawning and migration, sources of food for migratory birds, and areas of animal and plant growth. Large-scale reclamation activities have converted a large number of tidal flat wetlands along Jiaozhou Bay, resulting in a large reduction in the biological species in the tidal flat wetlands and the endangerment or local disappearance of ecological service functions [55]. On the coast of Jiaozhou Bay, activities such as aquaculture, port docks, and port industries have increased the discharge of pollutants into the sea, while the reduction in tidal flats has weakened the self-purification capacity of the sea area.…”
