Development of web-virtual laboratory to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of remedial learning

Abstract: The industrial revolution 4.0 demands universities to improve the quality of the graduates, while the competency standards have not yet been fully achieved. This study aims to build a virtual laboratory (V-Lab) as an independent practicum media through remedial learning. The development of V-Lab used the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) model with the software Code Codeigniter and PHP 7.2, while the database used MySQL and PostgreSQL. The testing was done with Stub Testing, Unit Testing and inspection with… Show more

“…Virtual laboratories help educational institutions to save space in areas where institutions cannot afford the physical infrastructure. Through these laboratories, the appropriate use of equipment and their assembly can easily be performed and effective in time management, and students can repeat any practical task without the waste of any equipment [24]. It helps for assessing the performance of students in crowded groups during practical work, and the maintenance of these laboratories is also inexpensive [25].…”

“…Utilization of the Virtual Labs application makes learning more interesting, interactive, effective, and efficient; and learning can occur anywhere and anytime and in real time [12]. Virtual Labs simplifies complex processes into simple processes, visualizes abstract objects into reality, and reduces the risk of harm in science and technology periments [4], [11]. In addition, virtual laboratories with interactive simulations can improve creative thinking and problem solving skills, increase the meaning of what is learned, and provide a real context for learning with real conditions [13], [14].…”

“…Universitas Negeri Medan (Medan State University) has long been experiencing problems in the implementation of laboratory practicums, especially in the Faculty of Engineering. Under normal conditions, laboratory practicums are always delayed due to a lack of facilities, a substantial number of students using the laboratory, and limited availability of practicum sessions [4]. The existence of the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the conditions because actual laboratory practicums were not allowed.…”

“…However, there are challenges in achieving this goal, because many factors can determine the quality of TVE graduates. The North Sumatra Province of Indonesia has experienced problems related to low-quality graduates [4]. Although several efforts have been made, the learning outcomes still have not reached the target.…”

“…Although several efforts have been made, the learning outcomes still have not reached the target. In the electrical engineering study program, low student learning outcomes are typically caused by weak competencies in engineering and physics, which form the basis for achieving professional competence [4], [5]. This problem is experienced not only by TVE graduates in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia, but also in other areas, as indicated in the research results [1], [6][7][8].…”
