Development of the Person–Environment Fit Scale (PEFSC): A new measure of creativity.

Abstract

There are scales measuring creative person and creative environment, but no scale has attempted to assess both the person and the environment in relation to each other. The primary objectives of the current study were to develop a scale (Person-Environment Fit Scale for Creativity [PEFSC]) for simultaneous assessment of person-and environment-related aspects of creativity and their fit and to explore the reliability and validity of this scale. Two different studies were conducted. In the first study, internal consistency and exploratory factor analysis results from 413 Turkish middle school students suggested a 14-item scale but there was evidence for both 1-and 2-factor solutions. The data also provided evidence for both the reliability and criterion validity of the PEFSC's scores. In the second study, data from 352 students were subjected to a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) that provided support for the 2-factor solution derived from the first study. Although the 1-factor solution yielded satisfactory values of fit indices, the CFA results provided stronger support for a 2-factor solution for PEFSC scale. It was concluded that use of the 2-factor PEFSC can provide adequate assessment of the person and environ ment components of creativity.
