Convergent, Discriminant, and Incremental Validities of Person–Environment Fit Scale for Creativity in Predicting Innovative Behavior

Abstract: This study examined the validity of a 14‐item two‐factor person–environment fit scale for creativity (PEFSC) to measure the personal and environmental components of creativity. A sample of 2,475 participants completed the PEFSC for evaluating the factor structure. For convergent, discriminant, and incremental validities, a subsample (N = 362) completed the creative self‐efficacy scale, support for innovation subscale of the team climate inventory, and innovative behavior measure. “…The evidence indicated that support for innovation can enhance the positive impact of creative self-efficacy on opportunity recognition. This finding is consistent with the viewpoint that when individuals perceive support for innovation, their belief and initiative to engage in creative activities are enhanced (Navaresse et al, 2014;Lukes and Stephan, 2017;Duan and Li, 2020). “…According to social cognitive theory ( Bandura, 1999 , 2012 ), individuals have the ability to influence their own behaviors through the interaction of cognitive, emotional and environmental factors ( Bandura, 1997 , 1999 , 2012 ). Specifically, support for innovation contributes to the development and accumulation of individual cognition and social relationship ( Jaiswal and Dhar, 2015 ; Çekmecelioğlu and Özbağ, 2016 ; Duan and Li, 2020 ) and can help individuals utilize and maintain their creative potential ( Williams and Foti, 2011 ), which intensifies the influence of their creative self-efficacy on opportunity recognition ( West, 1990 ; Bagheri, 2017 ). Moreover, support for innovation can provide psychological and physical resource to support individuals when they engaged in intrapreneurship ( Gumusluoğlu and Ilsev, 2009 ; Hsiao et al, 2014 ; Ma and Corter, 2019 ).…”

“…The person-environment or interactionist framework (Duan & Li, 2018; Duan et al, 2019; Livingstone et al, 1997; Mischel & Shoda, 1995) proposes that particular contexts or situational demands motivate specific responses in people depending on their personality traits. In other words, personality traits are activated and/or expressed in response to trait-relevant situations (Dolgova et al, 2010), and this may differently shape people’s behavioral responses to such situations.…”
