Development Of The Lateral Equilibrium Reaction In Stance

Abstract: SUMMARY The lateral equilibrium reaction in stance was assessed in 80 normally developing children aged from nine months to five years. A scoring system and checklist were devised to describe the character and presence of the reaction. The earliest non‐functional response was seen at nine months of age, and no functional response was observed to both sides until after two years of age. A progressive increase in functional response to both directions of tilt occurred between 12 and 18 months, with an unexpected… Show more

“…These findings provide supportive evidence for prior work revealing an ability of glial cells in the head of the worm to communicate broadly to the rest of the worm body (Figure 9). The molecules that communicate these effects are suppression of oxidative stress (Perham et al, 1987;Philips & Rothstein, 2017). Local mechanisms allow for glial-neuron interdependence that may be determined by "who partners with who.…”

“…Possibly, such signals relay glial metabolic state or neuronal activation to the periphery, whereas the impact of glia on neighboring neurons is conveyed by different classes of molecules. Glia, both astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, are known to exchange many factors of diverse character (e.g., amino acids, lipids, metals) with neurons including molecules involved in energy production and suppression of oxidative stress (Perham et al, 1987; Philips & Rothstein, 2017). Local mechanisms allow for glial‐neuron interdependence that may be determined by “who partners with who.” The degenerative effects of swip‐10 mutation provide a demonstration of this, with neurons ensheathed by glia displaying neurodegeneration, whereas unsheathed neighbor neurons appear insensitive to the mutation (Murphy‐Royal et al, 2017).…”
