The purpose of this study was to: (1) to determine the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) model on critical thinking skill, and (2) to determine the effect of PBL model on environmental attitude. This study used a quasi-experiment model with a pretestposttest control group design. The subjects of this study were students of Social Sciences Education Program, Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, Indonesia, academic year 2018/2019. The sampling technique used purposive sampling and determined 25 subjects in each experimental and control class. Data collection used a test as an instrument of critical thinking skill and a questionnaire that were used to know the students' environmental attitude. The data analysis used independent sample t-test. The results showed: 1) there is a significant influence of PBL model on students' critical thinking skill (p=0.010) and 2) there is a significant influence of PBL model on students' environmental attitude (p=0.000). The PBL model has higher influence on critical thinking skill and environmental attitude than to conventional model. The use of problem-based learning models in activities to solve environmental problems encourages students' critical thinking skills to foster an environmental attitude.

This article focuses on the development of, and research about, a strong democracy education intervention, the Just Community approach. Three questions frame the discussion: 1) Does Just Community change student or do student in these program change their school? 2) How Just Community change student and how Just Community change their school? 3) How can democracy be 'learned' by student in these program? This article begins with a brief history of the Just Community approach, a description of the original developmental model created by Lawrence Kohlberg, some research has been created in European and US. Just Community’s theoretical basis: Piaget’s cognitive development theory and Durkheim’s view of collective socialization. How to run this program? The arrival of foreign cultures due to globalization will be able to fade the culture of local communities if there is no selection process. Selection process can be done if a nation has a strong character foundation The 2013 curriculum as a reference for education in Indonesia has been emphasizing eighteen characters derived from local wisdom that need to be integrated in the teaching and learning process. The current study intended to explore the believe of primary school teachers on integrating Balinese local value called Tri Hita Karana in teaching character education. This study was a survey study followed by 94 elementary school teachers. The results show that elementary school teachers in Buleleng, Bali are aware of the significances of inserting the values of Tri Hita Karana in the learning process, they believe that the Tri Hita Karana concept is very much in accordance with the values of character education, and the integration of Tri Hita Karana values into the teaching and learning process will strengthen the students’ character and national identity.
