Development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Technology in China

Abstract: Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is an indispensable option for achieving carbon neutrality. This study evaluates the technical development level, demonstration progress, cost effectiveness, and CO 2 reduction potential of CCUS in China to review the status of CCUS and identify its future direction of development. The conclusion indicates that China's deployment of CCUS projects has developed rapidly and is generally at the stage of industrialized demonstration; although the overall development i… Show more

“…Sinopec prioritized the CO 2 capture technology with its intellectual property rights to prepare high-concentration CO 2 by means of hydrogen, ethylene glycol, and coal chemical production equipment and recycle the flue gas from the owned power plant in the national carbon market. It is comprised of two parts, namely CO 2 capture by Qilu Petrochemical and CO 2 oil displacement and storage by Shengli Oilfield [34]. Qilu Petrochemical transported the captured CO 2 to Shengli Oilfield for oil displacement and storage, realizing the integrated application of CO 2 capture, oil displacement, and storage.…”

“…The implementation of CCUS projects consumes water and energy during the process of capturing and storing carbon. The additional energy consumption is around 68.2-85.4 (kgce/t) [80] and the water consumption is around 20 to 40 (m3/t CO 2 ). There is no clear evidence for the development level of CCUS technologies to improve efficiency.…”

“…For consistency, we further applied the companion prediction with electricity demand in Xie's study [85] as a baseline scenario input for coal electricity share (Table 13). According to the statistics collected by the Ministry of Science and Technology for CCUS demonstration projects nationwide, since the first CCUS demonstration project in China was put into operation in Shanxi in 2004, there were 38 CCUS projects in operation before 2020, with a total capacity of 5 Mt/year [80]. Under the carbon-neutral target, the overall emission reduction demand of CCUS in China is ~20-408 Mt CO 2 in 2030, ~600-1450 Mt CO 2 in 2050, and ~1-1.82 Gt CO 2 in 2060 [86].…”

“…The carbon yield is 400,000 tons per year, and the capture of CO 2 is used for the injection of oil into the field or oil displacement (EOR, enhanced oil recovery). Table 2 shows CCUS projects currently operating in China with an annual capture of over 100,000 tons [ 21 ]. In 2007, the CNPC Jilin Oilfield CO 2 -EOR Research and Demonstration project realized the industrialization of CCUS-EOR technology for the first time in China, representing a milestone CCUS project in China.…”

Subsequently, the Shenhua Ordos new coal-to-oil CO 2 capture and storage project in 2011 was China’s first test project of saline geological storage [ 21 ].…”
