Toward a Carbon-Neutral State: A Carbon–Energy–Water Nexus Perspective of China’s Coal Power Industry

Abstract: Carbon neutrality is one of the most important goals for the Chinese government to mitigate climate change. Coal has long been China’s dominant energy source and accounts for more than 70–80% of its carbon emissions. Reducing the share of coal power supply and increasing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in coal power plants are the two primary efforts to reduce carbon emissions in China. However, even as energy and water consumed in CCUS are offset by reduced energy consumption from green energy… Show more

“…In China's energy system, the status of coal as the main source of energy is stable at present and will remain so for a long time to come [1][2][3][4][5]. The proposal to achieve national "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" has further promoted the high-quality development of the coal industry [6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…Coal accounts for 87.4% of China's known energy reserves, with thick coal seam resources accounting for nearly 50% [1][2][3]. To improve the mining efficiency of coal mines, the proportion of longwall top coal caving (LTCC) in coal mining is becoming more and more extensive [4,5].…”

“…China has set a carbon-neutral target by 2060, a clear target for decarbonizing the current social and economic development [ 45 ]. The value of blue carbon in biodiversity protection and climate change mitigation is widely acknowledged [ 46 ].…”
