“…To address this issue, Collison and colleagues (2018) adopted an elemental perspective to develop the 52‐item Five‐Factor Machiavellianism Inventory (FFMI) and, later, the 15‐item FFMI Short Form (Du et al., 2021). Starting with ratings of how experts believe Machiavellianism should relate to the FFM, the researchers identified 13 subscales that could be arranged into three domains: (1) antagonism (i.e., selfishness, immodesty, manipulativeness, callousness, and cynicism), (2) agency (i.e., achievement‐oriented, active, assertive, competent, self‐confident, and invulnerable), and (3) planfulness (i.e., deliberate and ordered).…”

“…One can map Machiavellianism on the five-factor model of personality, resulting in a profile of 13 facets that include high Conscientiousness and low Agreeableness. A short version of this scale with the three higher-order factors Antagonism (selfish and manipulative), Agency (assertive and feeling invulnerable), and Planfulness (deliberate and orderly) can distinguish Machiavellianism well from psychopathy (Du et al, 2021).…”

“…Despite the development of psychometrically superior competitors (e.g., Dahling et al., 2009; Kessler et al., 2010) and revisions (e.g., Monaghan et al., 2016), the original MACH‐IV remains the most used measure of Mach today. We offer the freely available Five‐Factor Machiavellianism Inventory (FFMI; Collison et al., 2018) and its super‐short form (Du et al., 2021) as alternatives which benefit from the rich FFM evidence base and derivation based on experts' ratings of the traits thought to best describe this construct (Miller et al., 2017).…”

“…To increase the utility of the FFMI, Du et al. (2021) recently developed a 15‐item super‐short form (FFMI‐SSF) by selecting the one or two (in the case of Planfulness) items per FFMI subscale with the highest loading on its intended factor. Strong convergence between the FFMI‐SSF and FFMI ( r s ranging from 0.87 to 0.93 for corresponding factor or total score; profile similarity ranging from 0.94 to 0.99; Du et al., 2021) suggests efficient and economical assessment of Mach at the total scale level, as well as factor scores for Agency, Antagonism, and Planfulness without sacrificing gains in terms of construct validity, multidimensionality, and divergence from psychopathy.…”
