Abstract: Machiavellianism is a personality construct characterized by cynicism, callousness, and skillful manipulation of others to achieve personal gains. We review the Machiavellianism literature with a particular focus on its measurement alongside narcissism and psychopathy in the so-called "Dark Triad" (DT). We discuss criticisms of Machiavellianism on the grounds of insufficient construct validity as well as its virtual indistinguishability from psychopathy when assessed by commonly used instruments. “…Honesty–Humility was negatively associated with Machiavellism, Sadism, and subclinical Psychopathy, with effect sizes that could be regarded as medium. However, it was pointed out that the questionnaire adopted does not tap properly into the true construct of Machiavellism (Miller et al, 2017; Sharpe et al, 2021), thus, correlations with Machiavellism should be interpreted cautiously. Anxiety, Stress, and Depression were all positively associated with Emotionality, with medium effect sizes.…”

“…As already suggested, the Liberals have been the dominant Canadian party in federal politics. A key component of Machiavellianism is cynicism (Sharpe et al, 2021), so lower levels of LPC partisanship among Machiavellians may reflect a combination of right-leaning political orientation and cynicism towards the dominant political party.…”

“…Contrary to the advancements in the research on narcissism and psychopathy (e.g., Miller et al, 2021; Patrick, 2022), Machiavellianism is most frequently analyzed in the context of the Dark Triad (Kowalski et al, 2021). As a result, despite the existence of well‐acknowledged multidimensional models of narcissism and psychopathy and some promising investigations about the multidimensionality of Machiavellianism, further research is needed to better understand this construct (Collison et al, 2018; Sharpe et al, 2021).…”
