Packed Bed Photoreactor for the Removal of Water Pollutants Using Visible Light Emitting Diodes

A packed bed photoreactor was developed using a structured photocatalyst active under visible light. The packed bed reactor was irradiated by visible light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for the evaluation of photocatalytic activity in the removal of different types of water pollutants. By using a flexible LEDs strip as the external light source, it was possible to use a simple cylindrical geometry for the photoreactor, thereby enhancing the contact between the photocatalyst and the water to be treated. The visible light active structured photocatalyst was composed by N-doped TiO 2 particles supported on polystyrene spheres. Photocatalytic results showed that the almost total methylene blue decolorization was achieved after 120 min of irradiation. Moreover, the developed packed bed photoreactor was effective in the removal of ceftriaxone, paracetamol, and caffeine, allowing it to reach the almost total degradation of the pollutants and a total organic carbon removal above 80% after 180 min of visible light irradiation. of pollutants through the application of conventional lamps as light sources [20]. However, since conventional lamps are expensive in terms of manufacturing, as well as electricity consumption, many studies have been devoted to photocatalytic reactors that exploit the solar spectrum [21].But it is necessary to take into account the many limitations related to solar photoreactors. For example, in a solar compound parabolic collector (CPC), despite the fact that the reactor is formed by small tubes, the area equipped by the parabolic collector for light harvesting is huge. So, the installation of these systems also requires a large area [22] to avoid that the single modules projecting shadows upon each other [23]. Another limitation this kind of system is connected to the use of only direct sunlight [24,25]. Thus, the solar photoreactors do not work efficiently during cloudy days and night time. The recent rapid advances in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) technology have made possible a new frontier for a wide range of lighting applications, including photocatalysis and, consequently, photoreactor design [26,27]. In fact, the energy conversion efficiency of LEDs has increased exponentially in recent years, making them a suitable light source for the design of compact photocatalytic reactors for water and wastewater treatment [28,29], as well as for the removal of hazardous compounds from gaseous streams [30], overcoming the limitations related to the developing of photocatalytic reactors into pilot scale level. Ceftriaxone sodium is a third-generation semi-synthetic antibiotic belonging to the class of cephalosporins. Is administered only by parenteral route and has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. It has bactericidal action; its main activity is related to the Gram-negative bacteria, being also able to act against Gram-negative bacilli resistant to the first- and second-generation cephalosporins. The present study presents a survey of the characteristics, properties and analytical methods used for the determination of ceftriaxone sodium, for the gathering of data searches were carried out in scientific articles in the world literature, as well as in the official compendia. It is necessary to create awareness about the importance of developing effective and reliable analytical methods for quality control and consequently for conducting pharmacokinetic, bioavailability, bioequivalence studies as well as for the therapeutic monitoring of this drug. Most of the methods found use high-performance liquid chromatography, but also methods that use absorption spectroscopy ultraviolet, infrared spectroscopy, spectrofluorimetry and microbiological methods have been presented. A discussion was presented highlighting the need to develop new ecological methods using less toxic solvents, rapid analysis and miniaturization of the samples.

ABSTRACT:The objective of the present study is to develop and validate a novel stability indicating UV spectrophotometric method for estimation of Benzydamine Hydrochloride (BNZ) in pharmaceutical dosage form as not a single UV spectrophotometric method has been reported for the estimation of Benzydamine Hydrochloride, which makes the present work novel. In the present research work, UV spectrophotometric determination was carried out at an absorption maximum of 305.6 nm in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer. The purposed method was validated statistically for linearity, accuracy, precision, repeatability, ruggedness, sensitivity as per International Conference on Harmonization guidelines. The drug substance was exposed to acid hydrolysis, alkaline hydrolysis, oxidative degradation, photolytic degradation, and thermal degradation and the stressed samples were analyzed by the proposed method to demonstrate the specificity of the method. The application of developed method was established by performing the assay of pharmaceutical formulation. The proposed method obeyed beer lambert's law in the concentration range of 5 -50 µg ml -1 with correlation coefficient (r 2 ) of 0.999. Percentage relative standard deviation associated with all the validation parameters were ≤ 2%. There were no significant changes in absorbance after performing the forced degradation studies and the % age drug recovery was found to be 98.53% and 98.53% for film and gel respectively. The proposed method was found to be novel, simple, rapid, precise, selective, reproducible economical and stability indicating can be successfully applied to the determination of Benzydamine Hydrochloride in bulk and in pharmaceutical dosage form.
