Development and reproductive performance of Hereford heifers of different frame sizes up to mating at 14-15 months of age

Abstract: -Body development and reproductive performance of a hundred forty-two 14 to 15-month-old heifers, classified at weaning according to frame size as small, medium, and large, were evaluated. The parameters evaluated were: body weight, hip height, body condition score, weight gain, ovarian activity, and pregnancy rate. At weaning, body weight and hip height were significantly different among frame scores, (small -133.0 kg, 92.2 cm; medium -158.5 kg, 96.6 cm; and large -185.2 kg; 100.2 cm). After weaning, heifers … Show more

“…The higher weight of early-born female calves did not influence their subsequent weights at calving and weaning nor the weight of their calves, as primiparous cows, diluting the greatest development until the first mating during the first gestation period, especially when exposed to non-ideal nutritional conditions, due to increased demands for lactation which are increasing (Castilho et al, 2018;Silva et al, 2018).…”

“…There was no difference in pregnancy rate between the BMI classes (Table 2). M. D. Silva, Lobato, Vaz, Eloy and Vaz (2018) evaluated different ratios of weight (kg) to hip height (cm) in Hereford heifers mated at 14-15 months of age and also found no differences in pregnancy rate. However, in the present experiment, all groups had reached the minimum weight recommended for their mating age.…”

“…Lemaster, et al, (2017) also reported positive correlations between milk yield and calf development. The heavier weight of calves from the Heavy cows, even at 67 days, has an importance within the production system, because weaning weight is associated with the slaughter age of future steers (Pötter & Lobato, 2003) and with the first service of heifers at 13/15 months of age (Silva, et al, 2018).…”
