Development and Calibration of a Large-Scale Microscopic Traffic Simulation Model

Abstract: The development and the calibration of a microscopic traffic simulation model, using MITSIMLab, for the entire metropolitan area of Des Moines, Iowa, are presented. The primary contributions include the application of a microscopic model on such a large-scale network and an effort for joint calibration of the model parameters and estimation of origin-destination flows. The application of microscopic traffic simulation models to very large networks such as this poses a number of methodological and practical cha… Show more

“…VISSUM and VISSIM software are widely used as a research tool. The OD matrix correction module in VISSUM is studied, and proved it a reliable matrix correction tool [12]. The reliability of VISSIM simulation is compared in different circumstances, and the conclusion is that it is a reliable micro simulation tool [13].…”

“…In microscopic traffic simulation, traffic conditions usually undergo a process from unsteady state to steady state and meanwhile, evaluation indexes such as speeds and delays gradually converge to some fixed values [6]. If simulation duration is not long enough, simulated traffic may have not yet reached a steady state and simulation results are meaningless.…”

“…The most popular microscopic traffic simulation programs are CORSIM, INTEGRATION, WATSIM, TRANSIMS, MITSIM, PARAMICS, VISSIM, and AIMSUN (TRB, 2010). There are several contributions in the literature on calibration/validation of simulation models to match field conditions (Dowling et al, 2004;Jha et al, 2004;Ni, 2004;Toledo and Koutsopoulos, 2004).…”
