Model-Driven Web Engineering (MDWE) approaches aim to improve the Web applications development process by focusing on modeling instead of coding, and deriving the running application by transformations from conceptual models to code. The emergence of the Interaction Flow Modeling Language (IFML) has been an important milestone in the evolution of Web modeling languages, indicating not only the maturity of the field but also a final convergence of languages. In this paper we explain the evolution of modeling and design approaches since the early years (in the 90’s) detailing the forces which drove that evolution and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of some of those approaches. A brief presentation of the IFML is accompanied with a thorough analysis of the most important achievements of the MDWE community as well as the problems and obstacles that hinder the dissemination of model-driven techniques in the Web engineering field.

Semantic Web applications offer the benefit of providing reusable machine understandable content in the form of an ontology. Machine understandability is one of the most important aspects that differentiate Semantic Web based applications from traditional software. Hence, there is a need to adapt several features of the Software Engineering paradigm to Semantic Web based application development in order to make development and delivery of the latter, more efficient. In this paper, a rigorous review of the state of the art in this area has been presented. The existing works on Software Engineering processes for Semantic Web application development, on the process for reengineering web applications to Semantic Web applications, and on the quality assessment of Semantic Web applications have been reviewed with discussion on the brief process, tools used, contribution, limitations, and some other features of each work. In addition to identified research gaps in these directions, some observations have also been drawn.

Current Web 2.0 applications, either social sites or Rich Internet Applications, share several problems of interoperability when interconnecting different systems. It is therefore complicated to reuse (or export) the information between sources. In this context, where the value belongs to the data, not the application, the use of Semantic Web technologies opens a way of resolution with mature and standard technologies, thus leading to the Web 3.0. This paper presents the application of Sm4RIA (Semantic Models for RIA), a model-driven design methodology that facilitates the development of semantic RIAs (SRIA), to the design of social network sites. The SRIA approach introduced herein combines the main advantages present in each of the current trends on the Web. In addition to these benefits, the application of a model-driven methodology can speed up the development process and simplify the reuse of external sources of knowledge.
