Developing Semantic Rich Internet Applications Using a Model-Driven Approach

Abstract: Abstract. At present, the Web sometimes behaves as a heterogeneous mixture of several technologies with distinct purposes. On the road to the so-called Web 3.0, it is essential to integrate and harmonize techniques and technologies from its main branches. In this context, this paper focuses on two of these: Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and the Semantic Web. Although RIAs are the most distinctive and used types of Web 2.0 applications, owing to their intrinsic characteristics, some type of clients such as, … Show more

“…Many Web modeling approaches such as OOHDM [99], WebML [7] and OOH [43] improved their modelling primitives to specify interaction features by embracing Rich Internet Applications (RIA) features, those Web applications with advanced interaction features. The RUX method [80] provided support for improving both WebML and UWE with RIA features.…”

“…The work in [26] is an extension of OOHRIA [27] in order to outline the design and development process of semantically rich internet applications. Their approach known as Sm4RIA can speed up the development process by reusing structural knowledge as well as annotating semantic knowledge.…”

“…Although there currently exist several available solutions, they are dependent on the technology chosen for implementing the application. As mentioned before, the approach presented in this paper is based on the concept of Semantic Rich Internet Application (SRIA; Hermida et al, 2011), which can be defined as a RIA that extensively uses SW techniques and technologies to provide a representation of its contents and reuse existing knowledge sources on the Web.…”

“…The Social Semantic Web, as a combination of the Social and Semantic Web, is becoming a reality with new types of applications such as semantic blogs and wikis (described by Kinsella, Passant, Breslin, Decker & Jaokar, 2009), and different approaches that facilitate the reuse of knowledge between social platforms, such as FOAF (Friend of a Friend, http://foaf-project.org) or SIOC (Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities, http://sioc-project.org/). In this context, this paper presents the application of S m 4RIA (Semantic Models for RIA, Hermida, Meliá, Montoyo & Gómez, 2011), a model-driven design methodology that allows the creation of semantic RIAs, to the design of Web 3.0 RIA applications. In this case, the development of a social network site with a semantic RIA is employed as running example in order to explain the different stages of the methodology and the benefits of the use of SW technologies.…”
