Modelling in low-code development: a multi-vocal systematic review

In 2014, a new software development approach started to get a foothold: low-code development. Already from its early days, practitioners in software engineering have been showing a rapidly growing interest in low-code development. In 2021 only, the revenue of low-code development technologies reached 13.8 billion USD. Moreover, the business success of low-code development has been sided by a growing interest from the software engineering research community. The model-driven engineering community has shown a particular interest in low-code development due to certain similarities between the two. In this article, we report on the planning, execution, and results of a multi-vocal systematic review on low-code development, with special focus to its relation to model-driven engineering. The review is intended to provide a structured and comprehensive snapshot of low-code development in its peak of inflated expectations technology adoption phase. From an initial set of potentially relevant 720 peer-reviewed publications and 199 grey literature sources, we selected 58 primary studies, which we analysed according to a meticulous data extraction, analysis, and synthesis process. Based on our results, we tend to frame low-code development as a set of methods and/or tools in the context of a broader methodology, often being identified as model-driven engineering.

The role of web engineering in e-learning application development: a review study

Web engineering is a growing multidisciplinary paradigm that has hardly begun to curiosity the interest, researchers, and other key actors involved in developing web-based systems. Therefore, the effect of web engineering applications on e-learning systems should be investigated to guarantee that the web’s potential for supporting the learning process is appropriately used. The objective of the study highlights the advantages, benefits, and contributions of web engineering in developing e-learning systems. This is qualitative research. The primary data was collected via an in-depth study of pertinent research studies. The second tool was an interview with the e-learning systems developers. The results showed that the most influential web engineering tools to develop e-learning systems. Moreover, the main areas of development of e-learning systems include changing the learning environment characteristics, changing student behaviour, changing roles, and incorporating artificial intelligence (AI). The results also showed that web applications' main challenges in e-learning systems include technologies, adaptability, lack of experience and training, lack of funding, changing student preferences and needs, the gap between the mobile and computer versions, and security threats, job-overload, and time. It was found that web engineering has a significant role in developing e-learning applications.

The fact that a university website is developed and managed primarily in-house entails addressing multiple challenges to enhance the product quality, organization productivity, and customer satisfaction. Therefore, this paper introduces a holistic approach to website management that incorporates three key elements of software management: people, technology, and processes. Accordingly, a multidisciplinary team structure with distinctly outlined leadership, roles, skills, and responsibilities is proposed to manage websites effectively. Besides, an appropriate technology stack is identified to develop a website that is content-based, has a flat content structure, is not interactive, and does not require complex workflows. Furthermore, suitable project management, software development, and website business processes are adopted to produce high-quality services while satisfying time and cost constraints. Finally, applicable evaluation methods and key performance indicators are suggested to assess the effectiveness of the adopted business processes and the quality attributes of the website.
