Determining the impact of computer frustration on the mood of blind users browsing the web

Abstract: While previous studies have investigated the impact of frustration on computer users' mood as well as the causes of frustration, no research has ever been conducted to examine the relationship between computer frustrations and mood change for users with visual impairment. In this paper, we report on a study that examined the frustrating experiences and mood change of 100 participants, all with visual impairments, when they were browsing the web. “…As JAWS does not provide any programmatic means of directly accessing and recording this information, such studies would most likely use indirect measurements based on focus and navigation keystrokes. Evaluation of the impact of factors such as the number of links required to access items might provide empirical support for improvements to screen reader designs, which have been noted as a cause of difficulties for blind users Lazar et al, 2006;Lazar et al, 2007).…”

“…For example, if the shift key does one thing in one program, she has a hard time dealing with it if it does something else in a different application." (14) Frustration with computers has been documented for both the general computer users [Ceaparu et al 2004] and users with visual disabilities [Lazar et al 2006]. However, frustration may have greater impact on children with DS due to their limited cognitive and language abilities.…”

“…Otro desafío que se presenta corresponde a que los navegadores de voz actuales omiten varias señales visuales, tales como estilos de texto y estructuras de páginas, y carecen de información significativa sobre el foco actual. Por otra parte, Lazar et al ha reportado que los usuarios de lectores de pantalla se sienten frustrados por muchas razones, incluyendo las dificultades técnicas de la navegación, y esto afecta negativamente a sus sentimientos y su desempeño [25].…”
