Determination of the Minimum Anesthetic Concentration and Cardiovascular Dose Response for Sevoflurane in Chickens During Controlled Ventilation

Abstract: The minimum anesthetic concentration for sevoflurane in chickens was within the range of minimum alveolar concentration reported in mammals. When the concentration of sevoflurane is increased during controlled ventilation in chickens, decrease in arterial pressure should be expected.

“…When chickens were anesthetized with isoflurane or sevoflurane during controlled ventilation, there were dose-dependent decreases in arterial pressure but the heart rates did not vary. 10,11 In the case of ducks, Ludders et al 8 reported that neither the mean heart rate nor the mean arterial blood pressure varied significantly when anesthetized with 1.0 and 1.5 times the MAC of isoflurane during spontaneous ventilation. On the other hand, in another study, Ludders 6 reported that there was a significant dose-dependent increase in the heart rate when ducks were anesthetized with halothane during spontaneous ventilation.…”

“…Among the different inhalant anaesthetics, sevoflurane has several advantages, such as a lower blood-gas partition coefficient and a non-pungent odour, and it also provides rapid induction and recovery [9,10]. Both sevoflurane and isoflurane have been proven safe for use in parrots [11,12].…”
