Post-traumatic Stress, Work Performance and Employee Satisfaction Among Health Care Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Aim: This cross-sectional study was carried out to investigate post-traumatic stress, work performance and employee satisfaction of healthcare workers (HCWs) (nurses and physicians) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A face-to-face questionnaire was administered to 169 HCWs working in inpatient clinics of two public hospitals in İstanbul, Türkiye. The questionnaire comprised four parts, including a socio-demographic form, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), the Employee Performance Scale and the Employee Satisfaction Scale (ESS). Results: IES-R scores showed that 14.2% and 47.9% of participants experienced mild and severe post-traumatic stress (PTSD), respectively. IES-R total and all sub-dimensions scores (intrusion, avoidance, and hyperarousal) were significantly higher in participants who worked ≥48 hours a week and in those who were exposed to verbal/physical violence. EPS scores showed weak inverse correlations with the overall IES-R score (r=-.300; p=.000) and with all sub-dimension scores, while ESS scores (r=,528; p=,000) showed moderate correlations with the overall EPS score and strong correlations with all sub-dimension scores. Conclusions: The remarkably higher incidence of PTSD showed a close relationship with both satisfaction and performance levels among HCWs. As PTSD has long-term effects on the lives of HCWs as well as on quality of life, preventive interventions directed to the sources of PTSD in the work environment are of utmost importance and should encompass attempts to promote both satisfaction and work performance, and to establish safe working conditions. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of anaerobic exercise on cortisol, growth, and testosterone hormones in elite level athletes according to gender. Materials and Methods: A total of 16 elite athletes, 8 females and 8 males, aged between 18 and 23 years and actively engaged in sports, participated in the study. Measurements of height, weight, blood and hormone levels were taken before and after exercise. The data obtained were evaluated using SPSS 23 software, and the Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney U test were used to test the significance of the difference between two independent groups. Results: When the levels of cortisol, growth, and testosterone hormones were examined before and after anaerobic exercise in male athletes, it was found that growth (z=-2.10, p=0.03) and testosterone (z=-2.52, p=0.012) hormone levels increased after anaerobic exercise, and the difference was statistically significant. No statistically significant difference was found in cortisol hormone (P>0.05). In female athletes, when cortisol, growth, and testosterone hormone levels were examined before and after anaerobic exercise, it was found that cortisol (z=-2.24, p=0.02) hormone levels increased after anaerobic exercise, and the difference was statistically significant. No statistically significant difference was found in growth and testosterone hormones (p>0.05). Conclusion: It is thought that sports scientists can contribute to sports science by researching the effects of exercise on hormone secretion more comprehensively with different age, gender, branch, and different training methods.

The Impact of Islam on the Organizational Commitment of Athletes

Aim: Based on the scriptures of the religion of Islam, which obliges its followers to work, loyalty and honesty, as seen in the verses and hadiths, this study aims to examine the impact of the religion of Islam on the organizational commitment of athletes, who are one of the most important stakeholders of sports. Method: In the research, "Organizational Commitment Scale (OCS) and "Islamic Religion’s Impact on Sports Activites Scale (IRISAS) were used to determine the organizational commitment of the athletes and the impact of Islam in sports activities. Research data were obtained from 365 athletes according to the convenience sampling technique. The survey model was used in the study, which was conducted as a field study. For this purpose, distributions of demographic characteristics are shown with ratio, frequency and percentage. In addition, the correlation status between “Age”, “OCS”, and “IRISAS” were tested with the Correlation test. Regression analysis was also applied to determine the impact of Islamic religion on the organizational commitment of the athletes. Results: According to the findings, it has been determined that there is a positive and significant relationship between "age" and "organizational commitment" and "Islamic religious impact in sports activities". Conclusion: As a result of the regression analysis, it was determined that the impact of Islam in sports activities significantly predicted the organizational commitment of the athletes.
