Detection of four lymphotropic herpesviruses in Hungarian Patients with multiple myeloma and lymphoma

Abstract: It has been suggested that human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as KSHV (Kaposi's sarcoma-associated human herpesvirus), might possess a promoting effect in the development and progression of monoclonal gammopathies. In this study, the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human cytomegalovirus (CMV), human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) were tested in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) using both serologic and nucleic acid amplification techniques. The transient reactivation or cont… Show more

“…A hypothesized mechanism by which exposure to the public may contribute to MM risk is through transmission of oncogenic infections. Several widespread viruses, including hepatitis C [Duberg et al, 2005; Montella et al, 2001], Epstein-Barr[Csire et al, 2007], and human herpes virus-8 [Csire et al, 2007] have been associated with MM, possibly because they allow B-cell proliferation which could lead to the cancer [Vineis 1996; Dal Maso et al, 2006]. Some previous studies have reported associations between MM and occupations that involve exposure to the public, including service occupations (including waiters and waitresses) and teachers [Baris et al, 2004; Robinson et al, 1999; Svec et al, 2005].…”

“…The main site of replication is the B lymphocytes and many other cells in the human body. In conclusion, the data also indicate that in addition to HHV-8, the transitional reactivation of EBV may also play a role in the pathogenesis of MM (Csire et al 2007b). Prospective studies are needed to clarify the spectrum of viral infections and risk factors for disease better, and to define effective prevention and treatment strategies.…”

“…Although there is not accurate report for prevalence and incidence of disease in Iran but according to Iranian annual cancer registrant report in 2003, hematopoietic malignancies were the seventh common cancer [19]. It has been suggested that some viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and HHV-8 can be contributed in myeloma pathogenesis [5,[20][21][22] but these association has not been completely confirmed [22][23][24].…”

“…Csire et al [5] reported that HHV-8 could be played a role in the pathogenesis of MM. They tested presence of EBV, cytomegalovirus, human herpesvirus 6 and HHV-8 in patients with MM using both serologic and nucleic acid amplification techniques and compared their result with control group.…”
