Detection of ESBL and AmpC producing Klebsiella pneumoniae ST11 and ST147 from urinary tract infections in Iran

Abstract: In the present study a total of 200 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were collected from patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) in Tehran, Iran. Antibiotic resistance was determined by disk diffusion and broth dilution methods. Detection of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and AmpCs was performed using phenotypic tests. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied to detect the ESBL, AmpC, and integron genes. Analysis of AmpC and cassette arrays of integron genes was performed using DNA sequencing. P… Show more

“…Various transferable plasmids harbor the bla NDM-1 and bla OXA-48 genes (IncA/C, IncFII, IncN, or untypeable plasmids, and IncL/M, IncN, IncA/C, or untypeable plasmids, respectively) (13,14). NDM-1 and OXA-48 carbapenemaseproducing K. pneumoniae (CPKP) show a remarkable dissemination ability.…”

“…Klebsiella pneumoniae is a gram-negative bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, which as an opportunistic human pathogen causes severe infections such as urinary tract infections, meningitis, pneumonia, and septicemia, especially in hospitalized patients [1,2]. Recent reports indicate the high prevalence of multidrug resistance in K. pneumoniae.…”

“…Treatment of severe healthcare-associated infections caused by this microorganism is complicated by antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria is an issue that has been considered a global problem [5,6]. K. pneumoniae infections have long been treated with betalactam antibiotics.…”
