Desktop virtual environments: a study of navigation and age

Abstract: Navigation in virtual environments on desktop systems is known to be problematic. Research into the usability of the tools presented on two-dimensional interfaces indicates that, for even relatively simple tasks, users experience some degree of frustration. As the user community broadens with an increasing range of applications and services making use of three-dimensional presentation, the usability of these interfaces becomes ever more important. In this paper, we describe the results of an experiment perform… Show more

“…This study does not explicitly consider specific users or user groups [65], nor does it examine specific user needs, disabilities [33,52], or the role of user experience [10]. Nor does it discuss ease of learning, which is an important dimension of universal access that affects both the uptake and subsequent usage of information technologies, although it should be noted that many videogames adopt a learning-by-doing paradigm of learning, which is highly effective for users who have little propensity for reading instructions or time for undertaking formal learning in order to use information technologies.…”

“…Aging affects general changes (declines) in perception, cognition and movement control, which have an influence on learning and using digitised systems (Morrell et al, 2002;Neerincx et al, 2000;Xie, 2002). Seniors have been found to be slower than young adults on information retrieval tasks (Freudenthal, 2001;Nap, De Greef, and Bouwhuis, 2005), on 3D navigation using desktop systems (Sayers, 2004), and on web navigation (Neerincx et al, 2000). Not having access to or not being able to use digitised systems may put older adults at a disadvantage in terms of their ability to live independently (Czaja and Lee, 2007).…”
