The liquid desiccant air-conditioning system allows reducing energy consumption compared to the conventional compressor-type air conditioners. In order to develop desiccant materials for air conditioners, we have investigated the dehumidification capability of quaternary ammonium Ionic Liquids (ILs) and the equilibrium water vapor pressure of aqueous solutions of these ammonium salts. Among the seven tested types of ILs, 2-hydroxy- N , N , N -trimethylethan-1-aminium dimethylphosphate ([Ch][DMPO 4 ]) displayed the best dehumidification capability and the lowest equilibrium water vapor pressure. Furthermore, the 80% aqueous solution of [Ch][DMPO 4 ] exhibited a less corrosive effect on four types of metals, i.e., steel (hot dip zinc-aluminum alloy plated steel), copper (C1100P), aluminum (A5052), and stainless steel (SUS: SUS304). It should be noted that this [Ch][DMPO 4 ] is not only non-toxic but also exhibits a stable nature; the aqueous solution produced no odor after storing for over 1 year under ambient conditions.

Developing stable conductive materials with high conductivity for sodium ion (Na+) batteries attracts ever‐increasing attention. In this work, MOF‐based solid Na+‐conducting composites functionalized by ionic liquids (ILs) were explored through introducing five kinds of ILs and their corresponding sodium salts into the pores of MIL‐101‐SO3Na. The pore‐filling fraction of MIL‐101‐SO3Na was established and revealed as a key factor to enhance the ionic conductivity of the composites. Na‐salts could further improved the conductivity by increasing the number of conductive ions. Furthermore, all ILs and Na‐salts@MIL‐101‐SO3Na hybrid composites showed sharply enhanced ionic conductivity and displayed low activation energy. Particularly, as the pore‐filling faction elevating to 96.94 % with [Emim][BF4] and NaBF4 in the pores of MIL‐101‐SO3Na the ionic conductivity reached up to 1.32×10−2 S cm−1 and stabilized within 30 days at 150 °C. This study on Na+‐conduction in a MOF‐based system functionalized by ILs, providing guidance for exploring new solid ionic conducting materials.

Desiccant solutions, membrane technologies, and regeneration techniques in liquid desiccant air conditioning system

Liquid desiccant air dehumidification has gained substantial attention recently due to its attractive energy-saving capability, high moisture retention, and low regeneration temperature. However, there are still unresolved limitations in liquid desiccant air conditioning systems (LDACs). Among on-going studies are the search for greener desiccant solvents, high-performance membrane, and regeneration techniques hybridization. This review discusses up-to-date development of the performance influential components of LDACs, such as desiccant properties, regeneration techniques, membranes, energy sources, and hybrid system configurations. The corrosive nature of conventional halide salt solutions, non-biodegradability and high viscosity property of most ionic liquids necessitate the search for alternative solvents in LDACs. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) properties, such as non-corrosive, hygroscopic, biodegradable, and low viscosity idealize promising alternative desiccant solutions. Therefore, DES may be usefully explored and further investigated in LDACs to establish the degree of their capacities in replacing conventional desiccants. Non-thermal regeneration techniques and nanoparticle enhanced membranes were also found to improve the overall energy performance of the LDAC system. Nonthermal regeneration techniques can operate below 40 C and reduce energy utilization between 10% and 50% in indoor space cooling. The coefficient of performance (COP) of this regeneration category is capable of being as high as 6, which is an indication of its promising energy-saving propensity. Highlights• Review on liquid desiccant materials and the potential of deep eutectic solvents as bio-desiccants for air dehumidification.
