Design considerations of RFID based baggage handling system, a literature review

Abstract: The use of RFID based baggage handling system has widely spread all over the world. This brings a successfully decreasing in the amount of baggage mishandling. SITA 2017 reported that during 10 years until 2016 there is increasing of airline passengers, but decreasing in the amount of mishandled baggage. Many people believe that this great achievement was caused by IT implementation in baggage handling system in airport, including the massive use of RFID for baggage identification tool. Indonesia as one of the… Show more

“…The reference-based technique is the most popular reference method in which reference TAGs are used (TAGs must be equal to the TAGs to be tracked). The most similar possible characteristics when comparing the RSSI, few variables, such as the battery life or the difference between the quality of supposedly identical components, comprised each TAG's internal circuitry [53]. A technique was suggested in [54] for the tracking of RFID-tagged baggage through the modification of RSS and the reading of RSS rates without reference tags.…”

“…The unique beacon identifier can be associated with certain information on a cloud server, enabling smart services or IoT [69]. Radio frequency identification is a system capable of storing a large amount of data through devices called RFID tags [70]. It has the ability to measure environmental factors such as temperature, humidity or pressure [71].…”

“…Such an RFID tag would then contain the passenger data, information on origin airport and arrival airport and the flight number. It could be used not only to track baggage but also to track the position of passengers who have not arrived at the departure gate yet (Baskoro et al, 2017). Such an RFID tracking chip could be placed on a printed boarding pass or on a baggage tag.…”
