Design and performance analysis of a purely textile spiral antenna for on-body NFC applications

Abstract: Novel combinations of materials and construction techniques are key for the development of new textile antenna configurations for on-body applications. Stretchable, flexible and conformable features of textile antennas are one of the hot topics in research nowadays. This work gives a step forward with new designs of purely textile spiral antennas with flexible and robust features for Near Field Communications (NFC) onbody applications. Their performance is successfully validated with a real NFC chipset, and so… Show more

“…Although there are different studies about electromagnetic shielding textiles in literature, there is an urgent need to develop electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials [6]. Moreover, different groups have worked on textile antennas [7][8][9][10] and leather antennas [11] for wearables, in which the conductivity is a prerequisite. Therefore, in order to make resistive traditional leather conductive, different groups have worked with different methods [2][3][4][12][13][14].…”

“…Some research into the use of coupled coils in textiles has been presented recently. Attempts have been made to combine off-the-shelf near-field communication (NFC) technology with embroidered antennas to form contactless connections [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. The idea of creating full body-wide BANs using multiple antennas with in-fabric interconnects has been presented before [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ].…”

“…The potential use of wearable NFC devices for pervasive health monitoring was discussed by Prabhakar et al [27] and the use of RFID tags in retail shops clothing merchandise was presented by Serra et al [28]. Further on, the design and performance analysis of a purely textile antenna for NFC applications was presented in 2017 [29]; various embroidered wearable antennas for NFC and RFID were proposed by Jiang et al on 2019 [30]; and finally, very recently, a body temperature and sweat sensing system based on smart textile NFC components was proposed [31]. In parallel, industry-driven research is developing alternative technologies for deploying NFC antennas and chips in textiles and clothing [32][33][34].…”
