Design and Evaluation of the Lab-Scale Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger (STHE) for Poultry Litter to Energy Production

Abstract: Poultry litter is one type of biomass and waste generated from the farming process. This study performed a performance and process analysis of poultry litter to energy using the lab-scale shell and tube heat exchanger (STHE) system along with a Stirling engine and a swirling fluidized bed combustor (SFBC). The effects of tube shape, flow direction, and water flow rates on water and trailer temperature changes were investigated during the poultry litter co-combustion process. Energy flow analysis and emissions … Show more

“…In addition to rapid growth, the poplar cultivation technique can be tailored to serve diverse applications. For instance, construction wood, paper pulp, and biofuel are promising applications to poplar tree; just like other biomass including algae and poultry waste [10,16], poplar showcased promising results to produce fuel [17,18]. In addition, poplar ability to grow on waste water promoted its phytoremediation capacity [19].…”

“…Poultry litter is affected when moisture and relative humidity is increased above 70% in room/poultry house. In a result, ammonia (above 70 ppm) production increases which affects bird's health and reduces growth [24][25][26].…”

“…Many kinds of heat exchangers are utilized globally, and they differ due to the requirements placed on them. Shell and tube, plate and shell, double pipe, plate fin, and pillow plate are some examples of the types of industrial-scale heat exchangers [1]. Factors such as fluid flow rate and type and direction of the tube flow impact the performance of a heat exchanger [1].…”
