Design and characterization of low-cost fabric-based flat pneumatic actuators for soft assistive glove application

Abstract: We present the design of low-cost fabric-based Hat pneumatic actuators for soft assistive glove application. The soft assistive glove is designed to assist hand impaired patients in performing activities of daily living and rehabilitation. The actuators consist of flexible materials such as fabric and latex bladder. Using zero volume actuation concept, the 2D configuration of the actuators simplifies the manufacturing process and allows the actuators to be more compact. The actuators achieve bi-directional fle… Show more

“…Actuators made of fabrics work at lower pressures than elastomer actuators due to their inherent stiffness [ 75 ]. Therefore, several researchers have work on design, characterization, manufacture, and evaluation of soft elastomer actuators for hand [ 76 78 ] and wrist [ 79 ] rehabilitation.…”

“…The printing material is made of thermoplastic elastomer, which can be washed and reused with almost no maintenance and low production cost. Hong et al [33]- [35], have developed a soft rehabilitation glove with embedded corrugated fabric layer. The soft glove is made of silica gel material with internal channel and a corrugated mechanical structure on the upper surface.…”

“…Generally, the therapeutic devices are divided into two types: soft glove [10], [11], [12] and robotic hand [13], [14]. For soft glove, there are several kinds of actuators such as pneumatic [15], fiber-reinforced [16], spring [17], or motor [18]. Some researchers also have developed the hand rehabilitation models integrating with virtual display [19], [20], [21], [22].…”
