Description of Ektaphelenchus taiwanensis sp. n. (Nematoda: Ektaphelenchinae) found in packaging wood from Taiwan

Abstract: Ektaphelenchus taiwanensis sp. n. is descdbed and figured. The new species was isolated from pine packaging wood from Taiwan and inspected in Ningbo harbour, China, in 2009. Ektaphelenchus taiwanensis sp. n. is charactedsed by the lip region lacking a clear constdction separating it from the body contour, stylet relatively short (12-17 /xm) and without basal knobs, and presence of three lines in the lateral field. The female post-uterine sac is less than a body diam. long, the rectum and anus are absent and th… Show more

“…The biology of Ektaphelenchinae Paramonov, 1964 [46] is recently reviewed by Kanzaki and Giblin-Davis [47]. Based upon currently available data on predatory feeding habitat of both genera Devibursaphelenchus and Ektaphelenchus [3, 48], the predatory feeding habit is assumed for presently studied two species too, and the well-developed stylet apparatus of both species could support this hypothesis. It is however surprising that the subfamily has a wide range of feeding type.…”

“…Currently 28 species are placed under the genus Ektaphelenchus Fuchs, 1937 [1] (24 in Hunt [2], plus four recently described species: E . taiwanensis Gu, Wang & Chen, 2013 [3], E . ibericus Gu, Wang, Chen & Wang, 2013 [4], E .…”

“…have been detected (Gu et al, 2006). However, some species belonging to other genera of Aphelenchoi didae have also been detected from imported wood pack aging materials (Gu et al, 2010(Gu et al, , 2013aWang et al, 2013). Some Aphelenchoides species also have been re ported from pine woods in China (Zhuo et al, 2010), in cluding A. besseyi Christie, 1942, which is listed as a reg ulated pest and characterised by a star-like female tail tip (EPPO, 2004).…”

“…Multiplication of three species out of six nominal species on fungus medium strongly supports mycophagy hypothesis for this genus. Moreover, the other aphelenchid genera described in association with insects are considered to have either predatory habits as in Ektaphelenchus Fuchs, 1937 ( Golhasan et al, 2019a ; Gu et al, 2013 ; Miraeiz et al, 2017 ) and Ektaphelenchoides Baujard, 1984 ( Golhasan et al, 2019b ; Kanzaki, 2014 ) or mycophagy in Cryptaphelenchus Fuchs, 1937 ( Aliramaji et al, 2019b ). It remains to be determined whether mycophagous Cryptaphelenchus species have insect associations similar to those of Basilaphelenchus .…”
