Description of a Novel Probiotic Concept: Implications for the Modulation of the Immune System

Abstract: It is estimated that the first processed food products consumed by humans pertained to the category of fermented foods and beverages such as beer, wine, sauerkraut, fermented sausage as well as fermented milk derivatives such as yogurt and kefir. Thus, fermented foods are endowed with undisputed healthy properties due to the presence of probiotic microbes that not only help supporting the healthy human microbiota, but also produce bioactive or bio-available metabolites that contribute to the host's wellbeing. … Show more

“…63 Given these encouraging results, and considering that fermented foods that today would be called probiotics, were the first processed foods eaten by humans, it is consequential that specific probiotic formulas are being developed with the goal of targeting diseases such as autism and cancer where alterations of the microbiota have been described. 64 Interestingly, and consistent with the hypotheses put forward above, certain strains such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria appear to be beneficial in both diseases. 59,65 In addition to their involvement in rebalancing the healthy microbiota and the immune system, other mechanisms of action can be postulated for these beneficial effects in such diverse conditions.…”

“…K. marxianus is capable to assimilate lactose through β-galactosidase that hydrolyses this sugar to glucose and galactose, thus using these sugars as carbon source (Lane and Morrissey, 2010). This probiotic yeast could decrease cholesterol level, exert antifungal, antibacterial, antiinflammatory activity producing pro-inflammatory cytokines, thus reducing local and systemic inflammations (Pacini and Ruggiero, 2017;Şanlidere Aloğlu et al, 2016;Xie et al, 2015). Moreover, Rahbar Saadat et al (2020) recently described the inhibitory role of the EPSs produced by K. marxianus on colorectal cancer.…”

“…Although the etiology of autism still remains an unsolved puzzle with environmental and genetic factors playing a role that has not yet been fully established, it appears that strategies based on food supplements aiming at counteracting neuroinflammation and on the reconstitution of the gut and the brain microbiota may prove useful in the integrated approach to the disease [28,29,30]. With the invention and development of the Rerum ® , a supplement that can be integrated in the context of reconstituting the gut and the brain microbiota [31], an additional option for natural immunotherapy becomes available.…”
