Depressive morbidity and gender in community-dwelling Brazilian elderly: systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: The review indicates greater prevalence of both major depression and CSDS compared to rates reported in the international literature, while the prevalence of dysthymia was found to be similar. The high prevalence of CSDS and its significant association with cardiovascular diseases reinforces the importance of evaluating subthreshold depressive symptoms in the elderly in the community.

“…The high prevalence of depressive symptoms and subsyndromal depression among the elderly reinforces the importance of scientific research, as these disorders are associated with other medical conditions and the risk of progression to more serious depression 18 . Regional, population based studies are required so the identified variables can be addressed in a more effective and immediate manner by health managers and all healthcare areas serving this population.…”
