Depression in people with epilepsy in West China: Status, risk factors and treatment gap

Abstract: To evaluate the prevalence, suicidality and treatment gap (TG) of depression in people with epilepsy (PWE) in West China, and to explore the related risk factors. Methods: A consecutive cohort of PWE from West China Hospital was recruited. The Chinese version of the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy scale was used to assess depression and suicidality. Prevalence and TG of depression were calculated. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess risk factors of depression and suicidalit… Show more

“…We found in this study that epilepsyrelated factors including age at seizure onset and seizure frequency over the last year were associated with SUA levels in PWE. Similarly, age at seizure onset and seizure frequency have been reported as risk factors for depression in PWE [4,27]. These results may explain the link between SUA levels and depressive symptoms in PWE.…”

“…To our knowledge, epilepsy coexisting with psychological disorders, such as depression, is common [12]. Two previous studies in our area have identified a high prevalence of depressive episodes in PWE, based on rapid detection using C-NDDI-E [10,13]. Our findings not only provide information on the mental status of PWE during the epidemic, but also contribute to the understanding of the risk factors associated with depression.…”

“…Epilepsy is also associated with multiple co-morbidities and neuropsychiatric problems. Depression in particular has been reported in a sizable proportion of PWE [7] , [8] , [9] , [10] and a bidirectional relationship between epilepsy and depression is suggested [11] . While many studies over the past one year have reported an increase in seizure frequency in PWE [3] , [12] , [13] , [14] , [15] , [16] , [17] , [18] , however, to the best of our knowledge studies assessing the impact on depression in PWE are scarce.…”
