“…The main chemical components of propolis are flavonoids, phenolics, and aromatic compounds. 29 The use of propolis as an alternative intracanal medication has been suggested by several authors 21,22,30 due to its antimicrobial properties and biocompatibility 26,27 -features that have probably contributed to the findings obtained in our study. The goal of the present study was to contribute to the development of a new, more biological treatment protocol, with stronger antimicrobial effects and lower toxic effects.…”

“…21,22,23 The antibacterial activity of propolis has been primarily associated with the presence of flavonoids. 24,25 Another important characteristic of propolis is its biocompatibility, or the ability to maintain cell viability, as evidenced previously.…”

“…These cells exhibit a high degree of stability, ease of manipulation and cultivation, and high rates of proliferation without alterations in cell phenotype (YASUDA et al, 2010). Furthermore, cells from humans and mice exhibit no differences in responses between them (KANDASWAMY et al, 2010).…”

“…Intracanal medications play important roles in endodontic therapy, including elimination of microorganisms that survive biomechanical preparation (LANA et al, 2009), endotoxin neutralization, prevention of microorganism entry from saliva, reduction of pain, modulation of periradicular inflammation and stimulation of repair by mineralized tissue (KANDASWAMY et al, 2010;HEWARD;SEDGLEY, 2011).…”

“…6 One material widely used as an intracanal medicament is calcium hydroxide which is a bactericide, but it is not effective in eliminating microbes from dentin tubules because E. faecalis is resistant to it. 7 The optimization of the antibacterial activity of calcium hydroxide should be supplemented with another antibacterial substance such as iodoform. Iodoform can increase antibacterial activity, but has some shortcomings such as it can be dissolved rapidly by root canal microorganisms and have toxic effects on tissues.…”
