Earlier explanations of Jokowi’s rise to presidency in 2014 have mostly focused on his distinct qualities or the types of political support he received from Indonesian society. However, such explanations, albeit informative, pay insufficient attention to a key factor in Jokowi’s rise: Indonesia’s urbanisation. In this article, I first propose an urban analytical framework comprising three factors: urban-led national economic growth, decentralisation, and Jakarta-centrism in Indonesian media and politics. Then, I examine whether this framework can be applied to Jokowi’s rise by drawing on existing scholarship and data. Finally, I argue that urbanisation has shaped several key constituencies and grievances in Indonesia, contributing significantly to Jokowi’s rise. My argument concerns the following two ideas: first, the urban has become a new pathway to power in Indonesia for local politicians such as Jokowi; second, urban-centrism in Indonesia has made urban areas, especially Jakarta, important stages for political performance.

Political dynasties in Indonesia have been known since the era of hereditary kingdoms, the old order, the new order, and continued into the reform era. A political dynasty is defined as a political power exercised by a group of people who are still bound by family relations. Political dynasty is considered as one aspect that can influence the process of democratization, representation and accountability in local leadership. This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of political dynasties in the context of Village Head elections in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research results show that political dynasties in village head elections in Indonesia are influenced by several key factors. The research highlights the unclear legal rules after the Constitutional Court decision no. 33/PUU-XIII/2015, which provides an opening for dynastic political practices without clear control. Village institutions that are not yet democratic are also a major factor, allowing recruitment of village head candidates to be elitist and creating inequality in access to opportunities to become village head candidates. In addition, the strength of social networks, both formal and informal, has been shown to play an important role in forming political dynasties. The findings of this research provide insight into the impact of political dynasties on democracy and governance at the local level, indicating the need for reform in the village head election system to increase the inclusiveness, accountability and responsiveness of village leadership.

The freedom of association is one of the fundamental rights of a country. However, in Indonesia, the problems regarding of the legitimacy and recognition of the right to freedom of association have become stronger after the issuance of a The Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB) regarding the dissolution of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). This research is a legal research. This research uses statutory and conceptual approaches by using primary and secondary legal materials. The two legal materials are inventoried in order to obtain a prescriptive legal analysis; as well as providing a holistic conceptual study of the legal issues discussed. The research result states that the dissolution of FPI by the government is an act that violates human rights, particularly the right to freedom of association. The government uses the doctrine of the militant democracy to dissolve FPI. Then, the dissolution of FPI by SKB contradicts by the principle of the rule of law. Therefore, the dissolution of FPI was not carried out through to the court. Therefore, it is necessary to follow up on the action against 'radical mass organizations' in the form of presidential regulations or government regulations as a derivative renewal of the regulations concerning mass organizations.
