Degradation of Carcinogenic Hydroquinone in Coal Gasification Wastewater by Using Anaerobic Shaker Test

Abstract: Coal gasification wastewater, as a typical industrial wastewater has poor biodegradability and high toxicity. In this paper, simple anaerobic shaker test was conducted to investigate the degradation of hydroquinone in coal gasification wastewater. Anaerobic sludge shaker test were run for 27, 50 and 73 days, the phenol concentration were adjusted to 300 mg/L and 500 mg/L with pH 7.5, respectively. The experimental results also showed that this system could effectively deal with COD and phenol removal and remai… Show more

“…By shaker test 36 and chromatographic analysis it was concluded that the appropriate time for anaerobic hydrolysis acidication was 45 h. For the anaerobic (AnaEG) and aerobic (BioAX) reactors the operational strategies were the same as those described in our recent studies. 31,32 The anaerobic reactor start-up stage operation was run for 330 days; the whole process takes place in three stages as startup (run for 87 days, HRT 96 h), loading or stability (run for 110 days, HRT was reduced from 96 h to 48 h) and second start-up (anaerobic reactor was stopped for 10 days, followed by the start-up again and being operated for 133 days with HRT 48 h).…”

“…The main contaminants in the wastewater are phenol, cyanide, thiocyanate, ammonium 2 and so on, and most of them have been reported to be carcinogenic and mutative refractory organics. 3,4 In order to meet the discharge standard, a series of physiochemical and biological processes are usually employed together, including ammonia stripping, solvent extraction, anaerobic, aerobic system followed by membrane and crystallization technologies. 5,6 Although, this dual process is very effective, but still confronts with some issues, like complicated technology, large area is occupied, along with secondary pollution produced, such as extra sludge from biological process.…”
