“…For decades, the coal industry has remained a major source of wastewater ( Mz et al, 2020 ). In addition, numerous phenolic pollutants are present in coal chemical wastewater, which complicates its composition and water quality ( Ji et al, 2015 ; He et al, 2021 ; Bao et al, 2022 ). Particularly, semi-coking wastewater ( Liu et al, 2021 ), which is produced by the carbonization of coal at low (500–600°C) and medium (700–800°C) temperatures ( Bai et al, 2022 ), is contaminated with phenols, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and oil, etc.…”

“…Coal is an important basic energy source supporting the stable growth and sustainable development of the world economy. , With the excessive consumption of high-rank coal, more and more low-rank coal is currently being mined and applied. , In some countries, such as China and Australia, lignite has become a major resource used in industry. , As a typical low-rank coal, lignite itself is loose in texture, high in water content, and easily weathered in air. , Besides, lignite contains a large amount of volatiles and oxygen-containing functional groups, making it suffer from many disadvantages such as intense oxidation reactivity, a low ignition point, and high pollution when burned. Therefore, lignite is not easy to store and transport, which greatly limits the utilization of lignite and causes safety problems. , …”

“…Biologically pretreated coal gasication wastewater (CGW) could cause serious deterioration of the environment due to it containing a large number of various toxic and refractory compounds including phenolic compounds, long-chain hydrocarbons, nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds and ammonia. 1,2 What's worse, this wastewater exhibits poor biodegradability (BOD 5 /COD of 0.13), a low carbon/nitrogen ratio (COD/TN of 2.8) and toxicity to the microbes in the activated sludge process; the resulting water quality struggles to meet the standards for the reuse of water using conventional biological treatment methods. 3 Wastewater control has become a bottleneck for the development of the coal gasication industry, which has played a key role in the new clean and renewable energy market in recent years.…”
