Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma: A survival analysis of 159 cases from the SEER database (2001‐2011)

Abstract: The overall prognosis of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma is poor with a 5-year overall survival of 18%. Patients with a primary tumor located in the chest wall had a better prognosis. Tumors larger than 8 cm, presence of metastases at diagnosis, and treatment without surgical resection were significant predictors of mortality.

“…Our aim was to find pre‐treatment serum markers as independent factors for estimation of survival in chondrosarcoma patients. Several prognostic factors have been described in previous reports: Pelvic location, increased age, metastasis at diagnosis,4 pathological fracture,13 advanced tumor stage (AJCC III or IV), and size (tumors larger than 8 cm)2 and inadequate resection margins 14…”

“…The state of the art treatment consists of the wide resection of the tumor. Survival rates did not improve over the last decades despite aggressive resection, systemic treatment with chemotherapy and advanced diagnostic techniques 2. Our aim was to find pre‐treatment serum markers as independent factors for estimation of survival in chondrosarcoma patients.…”
