ResumoIntrodução: A esterilização por meio da autoclave de pontas diamantadas é um procedimento seguro e essencial para garantir um resultado eficaz no procedimento odontológico. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência da esterilização de pontas diamantadas em autoclave. Material e método: A pesquisa foi desenvolvida seguindo uma sequência de pesagem em balança de alta precisão, análises em microscópio eletrônico de varredura e ciclos de esterilização. Incialmente, um grupo controle contendo cinco pontas diamantadas 1015 (Microdont) novas e não esterilizadas foram pesadas e analisadas em microscópio eletrônico de varredura. Posteriormente, as mesmas pontas diamantadas foram submetidas à cinco ciclos de esterilização em autoclave e novamente pesadas e avaliadas microscopicamente. Em seguida, as mesmas pontas foram submetidas à mais cinco ciclos de esterilização, totalizando dez ciclos, e mais uma vez pesadas e analisadas em microscópio eletrônico de varredura. As fotomicrografias foram avaliadas qualitativamente e os dados quantitativos da pesagem foram tabulados e submetidos à análise estatística. Resultados: A análise qualitativa demonstrou que as pontas diamantadas sofreram alterações estruturais, sendo àquelas submetidas a um maior número de ciclos as que apresentaram maior corrosão. De acordo com a análise estatística da pesagem, não foi observada diferença no peso das mesmas nos três momentos analisados (p=0,956). Conclusão: A esterilização em autoclave acarretou danos às pontas diamantadas, ocorrendo alteração estrutural do aglutinante e recobrimento dos grãos de diamantes, porém não alterou o peso das mesmas. Abstract Introduction: In order to assure a safe procedure, the sterilization of the diamond burs is essential, however, it may structurally affect the cutting instruments and generate negative consequences for the result of the dental procedure, and autoclaving has excelled as a sterilization method of these instruments. Objective: To evaluate the influence of the autoclave sterilization of diamond burs. Methodology: The research was developed following a weighing sequence in a high-precision scale, scanning electron microscope analysis and sterilization cycles. Initially, control groups containing five new and non-sterilized 1015 diamond burs (Microdont) were weighed and analyzed using scanning electron microscope. Subsequently, the same diamond burs were submitted to five autoclave sterilization cycles and then were again weighed and microscopically evaluated. Then, the same burs were submitted to five more sterilization cycles, totaling ten cycles, and once again were weighed and analyzed using scanning electron microscope. Aim:The aim of this study is to compare the various cold sterilization techniques for sterilizing dental burs and diamond points by assessing the microbial growth in culture media on them before and after sterilization. Materials and methods:The following four disinfectants were used: 2% glutaraldehyde, 5.2% sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and 70% ethanol. There were two main groups taken as group I-carbide burs and group II-diamond burs. A total of 48 samples were collected, 12 samples per disinfectant. Each sample has two burs collected from same patient. One acts as control group which means only microbial count was determined without disinfection. The other one would be determined as microbial count before and after disinfection. The microbial assessment was done using brain heart infusion (BHI) broth and counted by plating in chocolate blood agar and MacConkey agar. Results:The obtained results were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and post hoc test. The results revealed that there was statistically significant difference between sodium hypochlorite and surgical spirit, sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide. There was no statistically significant difference between sodium hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde. Conclusion:The results of this study revealed that sodium hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde are most effective than hydrogen peroxide, and surgical spirit is the least effective disinfectant. However, there was clinical significance in level of disinfection of all four disinfectants.

Endodontic treatment consists of different working procedures, such as the isolation of the operating field, pulp chamber access, and cleaning and shaping phases with at last the need of a three-dimensional filling of the canals. Each step requires a series of single-use or sterilizable instruments. We have performed a systematic review of different sterilization and disinfection procedures aiming at drawing up a disinfection and sterilization procedure to be used on endodontic instruments. A search on PubMed and Scopus was carried out using the following keywords: “endodontic sterilization,” “endodontic autoclave,” “decontamination dental bur,” “sterilization dental burs,” and “gutta-percha points sterilization.” Eligible articles were included in the qualitative and quantitative analysis. Results of the meta-analysis showed that the most effective method in sterilization is autoclaving. The qualitative analysis showed that the use of single-use or first-use instruments requires presterilization or sterilization procedures, and for reusable tools, attention must be paid to the removal of debris deposited on the blades, not easy to remove manually.

Decontamination Methods Used for Dental Burs – A Comparative Study

Abstract: Findings of our study revealed that none of the methods used were found to be absolutely efficacious in the decontamination of dental burs. However, among the experimental groups used in the present study, autoclave was found to be the relatively best method.
