Decision support framework for integrating triple bottom line (TBL) sustainability in agriculture supply chain

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to address the conceptual and practical challenges in integrating triple bottom line (TBL) sustainability in the agriculture supply chain (ASC). It identifies the key enablers for each of the three dimensions of TBL sustainability, analyses their causal relationships as well as cross-dimensional interactions under each TBL dimension. Further, it develops a decision support framework (DSF) for the assessment of TBL sustainability practices and policies in ASC and validates it through a c… Show more

“…Sustainability performance as a process that impacts on the economic, environmental and social of an entity with certainty, more specifically economic performance must reflect the organization's impact on society (Büyüközkan & Karabulut, 2018;Dijkstra-Silva et al, 2022;Vieira Nunhes et al 2022). Environmental performance is related to the organization's impact on natural systems, ecosystems, soil, air and water related to the consumption of raw materials, water or energy [52]. Finally, social performance refers to the impact of an organization's activities on the social system which includes attention to employment and decent work practices as well as the consequences of the organization's actions on society or products (Samy et al, 2022;Souto, 2021).…”

“…In SSC, the economic dimension refers to the efficiency and effectiveness upstream and downstream of the SC. It also includes the firms' capabilities to achieve the proposed goals (Singh and Srivastava, 2022). Different studies have proposed integrated logistics (C12) as the influence of a company's planning and prediction on its partners (Lim et al, 2017); production efficiency (C13) focuses on reducing cost related to manufacturing and ensuring the feasibility of the process through the correct supply of materials (Choudhary et al, 2021); quality (C14) concerns an organization and its SC members meeting the requirements of consumers by offering goods or services that generate high value for customers (Moktadir et al, 2021); strategic supplier (C15) activates the supply chain operations through the supply of feedstock and raw materials as well as fast access to technological innovations for regional and lower-tier suppliers (Jakhar, 2015); economic stability (C16) relates to the integration of critical drivers into SC operations that enable the achievement of results superior to those of traditional supply chain during downturns (Pathak et al (2021), business strategy and commitment (C17) generate a right strategic-level policy to link this one with tactical and operational levels of the partners in order to implement sustainable development activities (Tseng et al, 2019); logistics optimization (C18) is associated to the optimization of routes, cargo and type of transport to minimize costs along the SC (Ahi et al, 2016).…”

“…The majority of studies on SSC analyzed in the literature review employed the TBL approach introduced by Elkington (1998), while those that examined SCRes followed a similar conceptualization. Based on this, the present study adopts the TBL approach due to their integrative design and their broad application in SCM (Nagariya et al ., 2022; Singh and Srivastava, 2022). It also incorporates resilience to structure the 4-integrated dimensions of a resilient-sustainable supply chain.…”

“…Moreover, nowadays there is a more holistic concept of sustainability; indeed, it is not restricted to the protection of the environment. For example, a widely spread accounting framework is the triple bottom line (TBL), which includes in addition to the environmental aspect also economic and social scopes [4][5][6]. The greatest energy-consuming agricultural practice is tillage, which is used in primary production.…”
