Various anaerobic starter seeds from different sources were investigated for their efficacies in treatment of different types of wastewater. Six combinations of starter seeds and wastewaters were selected out of 25 combination batch experiments and operated in semicontinuous reactors. It was noticed that the efficacies of various anaerobic starter seeds for biogas production from different types of wastewater in terms of reactor performance and stability were depended on wastewater characteristics and F/M ratio affecting microbial community and their microbial activities. However, exogenous starter seed can be used across different types of wastewater with or without acclimatization. Four reactors reached the targeted OLR of 2 kg COD/m3·d with high performance and stability except for concentrated rubber wastewater (RBw), even using high active starter seeds of cassava starch (CSs) and palm oil (POs). The toxic compounds in RBw such as ammonia and sulfate might also adversely affect methanogenic activity in CSsRBw and POsRBw reactors. DGGE analysis showed that propionate utilizers, Smithella propionica strain LYP and Syntrophus sp., were detected in all samples. For Archaea domain, methylotrophic, hydrogenotrophic, and acetoclastic methanogens were also detected. Syntrophic relationships were assumed between propionate utilizers and methanogens as acetate/H2 producers and utilizers, respectively.

La leche proporciona nutrientes esenciales y es una fuente importante de energía alimentaria, proteínas de alta calidad y grasas. Contribuye considerablemente a la ingestión necesaria de nutrientes como el calcio, magnesio, selenio, riboflavina, vitamina B12 y ácido pantoténico. El consumo de este alimento puede representar diferencias en la calidad de las dietas de las personas sin acceso a una nutrición adecuada, especialmente entre los niños. La composición de la leche varía de acuerdo a la incidencia de múltiples factores como la raza, tiempo de lactancia, alimentación, genética, condición climática, estado de salud y estrés de los animales, etc. La calidad y seguridad de la leche cruda de vaca puede verse perjudicada por diferentes razones, microorganismos, residuos químicos y otros contaminantes, lo que incide significativamente sobre la salud pública. El incremento de microorganismos en la leche causa importantes pérdidas. Actualmente, existe muy poca o ninguna publicación o referencia a nivel nacional que indique una caracterización de calidad de la leche cruda de vaca según su condición fisicoquímica, ni microbiológica. No obstante, los escasos trabajos existentes evidencian condiciones que requieren un mayor estudio y seguimiento para considerar el estado general de los hatos lecheros del país. De lo anterior, se desprende la necesidad de realizar estudios de Investigación, Desarrollo e innovación (I+D+i), que permitan establecer las condiciones de calidad de la leche que se produce en el país y correlacionar esta condición a los parámetros de calidad establecidos internacionalmente.

Industri susu merupakan salah satu industri penghasil limbah cair yang cukup besar. Pengolahan produk susu untuk setiap produk yang berbeda menghasilkan limbah cair dengan karakteristik yang berbeda pula dan berdampak pada lingkungan. Hal tersebut membutuhkan perhatian lebih terkait penanganan limbah cair yang sesuai. Tujuan dari naskah ini adalah untuk meninjau tentang teknologi penanganan limbah cair industri pengolahan susu secara biologis dari berbagai penelitian yang telah ada. Sumber dan karakteristik limbah cair industri pengolahan susu, opsi penanganan dan teknologi pengolahannya dideskripsikan. Penanganan secara biologis berupa penanganan aerobik dan anaerobik merupakan teknologi penanganan yang umum dilakukan pada limbah cair industri pengolahan susu dengan kelebihan dan kelemahan masing-masing dijelaskan secara detail. Berdasarkan pendekatan tersebut, pengolahan limbah cair pada industri susu lebih efektif dengan metode anaerob.
