This research discusses about umah pitu ruang found in the Gayo community in Tanah Gayo, Aceh. The purpose of the study is to describe the meaning umah pitu ruang and the history of the emergence of umah pitu ruang in the Gayo community. This study uses the historical method using five stages, namely topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that umah pitu ruang is a series of words from the Gayo language, umah means house, pitu means seven, and space means space. Thus, umah pitu ruang can be interpreted as a house with seven rooms. The term umah itself is the influence of Austronesian traditions and languages. Umah pitu ruang is thought to have appeared hundreds of years ago long before the emergence of the Linge Kingdom. It all started with the arrival of the ancestors of the Gayo tribe who initially lived in baking pans but later built simple stilt houses. Over time, the number of residents, cultural, and customary knowledge that developed led to the emergence of umah pitu ruang.

The aims of this research are; (1) Describe the form of cultural signs in the novel Toraja; When Love Finds its Way Home based on Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic theory. (2) Describe the meaning of cultural signs in the novel Toraja; When Love Finds Its Way Home. This research is a qualitative research. The data in this study are data obtained from novels in the form of icons, indexes and symbols as well as data obtained from interviews. Sources of data in this study is a novel entitled Toraja; When Love Finds its Way Home by Endang, SSN, and also an informant who is the head of the Ke'te Kesu' tradition in North Toraja. The data collection technique used in this study is a documentation technique which includes observing and recording the various signs that are needed, as well as using open interview techniques. The results of this study indicate that the form of the sign is more dominant in the novel Toraja; When Love Finds its Way Home is a symbol consisting of five data. In addition to symbols, researchers also found signs in the form of icons (one data) and indexes (two data). As we know that based on his criteria, Pierce distinguishes signs into three, namely icons, indexes and symbols.

The existence of customary courts in Indonesia is still prevalent. It had been erased and brought back again by national law. The present customary court is used by the Toraja Tribe. This article answers the questions of how is the execution of customary court in Lembang Nanggala Sangpiasalu and whether or not Kombongan is still used. Both questions are answered through research using the socio-legal method. The authors conducted interviews with To Parenge traditional leaders and a few members of the Lembang Nanggala Sangpiasalu society. The results show that the customary court still uses Kombongan and also musyawarah (discussion), but it is no longer obligatory to use the four levels of hierarchy Kombongan has. Parties involved in a dispute settled by Kombongan may choose to proceed with the higher levels of Kombongan or settle it through the district court.
